Un-Named tract on the South-Fork of the Thornton River

Aaron Tester - Liminal Space Photography. South fork of the Thornton River. Sperryville, Virginia.

Sperryville sits at the confluence of the north-fork of the Thornton River that flows out of Old Hollow, and the south-fork of the Thornton River which flows out of a hollow on the way to the Thornton Gap entrance of the Skyline Drive. From the first blind curve on Rt 211, the south-fork continues upstream into this obscure hollow, and the trailhead for Oventop Mountain begins its ascent from here. Not obvious to the passerby, the old narrow lane follows the river to the tract that I first explored in the late 1990’s. I am currently unable to find a family name tied to this location (if that changes, I will update with the new information).

Of what remains on this parcel (listed as 41a), the most prominent features are old overgrown orchard-land, the hulk of an old car, a metal bowl, numerous stone walls, and an old spring that was dug out, with a metal bucket still resting on the wall where it was left.
